Bec’s Favourite – Date and Walnut Loaf

This is a quick and easy cake to make for friends who pop over for morning or afternoon tea.  This cake is always met with surprise for how delicious it tastes. It’s simple to make, healthy and good way to get the kids eating dates if they don’t already. It worked on me!


  • 1 cup of Self Raising Flour (SRF)
  • ½ a cup of caster sugar
  • ½ teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda
  • 2 teaspoons of cinnamon
  • ½ cup of chopped dates
  • ½ cup of walnuts
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 2/3  cup of water


  1. Combine SRF, sugar, bicarbonate of soda and cinnamon in a mixing bowl
  2. Chop dates and walnuts into small pieces and add to dry ingredients
  3. Add butter and water into a saucepan and heat until boiling. Add to bowl of dry ingredients and mix
  4. Pour into a 22x10cm bar tin and cook for 40 mins at 170°c.
