What can I expect when I see a dietitian?

Initial consultations last between 40-60 minutes and follow up appointments are 20-30minutes.

Consultations will involve a relaxed one on one conversation to work through your dietary issues and we will:

  1. Collect information about you including: your family and medical history, your lifestyle, habits and relationship with food and any symptoms you are experiencing.
  2. Determine your current health status and discuss your personal goals.
  3. Analyse your current diet and discuss how it may be changed to improve your long term health and well being.
  4. Develop a personalised meal plan to suit your lifestyle.
  5. Provide education and fact sheets  giving you practical dietary advice that is easy to understand.
  6. Arrange follow up appointments where necessary. Follow up appointments are designed to make sure you receive the motivation and support you need to achieve your goals.

You will get the most out of your dietitian appointment by:

  1. Arriving on time.
  2. Providing sufficient information to allow an accurate assessment to be made.
  3. Being truthful when asked about eating patterns, portion sizes, exercise, medical history or other related issues.

Follow up appointments with your dietitian: 

Follow up appointments are an important part of your treatment plan and last between 20-30minutes. Your progress is carefully monitored, adjustments are made to your plan and ensure that the plan is realistic for you, further education is provided and most importantly ongoing motivation and support is offered to ensure you meet your health and well being goals. Do I need a referral to see a dietitian?

You do not need a referral to see a dietitian, however if you are on an enhanced primary care plan from your GP you will need to bring your EPC plan with you.
